Ah, luck is a funny thing. The ancient Romans called her Fortuna and thought she was a goddess. A very capricious, unpredictable, fickle, changeable, frivolous goddess. And the Romans didn't even have soccer to prove their point!
Absolutely CRAZY day today for World Cup soccer! I watched both the Ghana-Czech Republic match and the US-Italy match, and both were wild roller-coaster rides. You didn't know what was going to happen next! There were surprises everywhere, both good and bad.
The upset 2-0 Ghana victory was a shock to everyone, since all the experts had been predicting an easy Czech victory. But no! I hadn't even settled in my chair when Ghana scored in the second minute. And now Group E is all confusion. Suddenly with this win, we knew the US team wouldn't be eliminated right away no matter what happened with Italy. But overall, it was one of those days when ANYTHING could happen. What fun!
(And did you see one of the Ghanaian players waving a little Israeli flag?)
The US-Italy match was especially crazy -- a nutty own-goal by Italy's Zaccardo, red cards everywhere (have you ever seen that many red cards in one game?), spilled blood (literally), and a couple fine saves by Kasey Keller, the US goalkeeper. And it all ended in a 1-1 tie. Well, a tie is better than a loss!
Right now I'm hearing a LOT of complaining about the referee too, for giving out 3 red cards. Well, I am exhausted now. But what a fun day for watching soccer! I do believe I am becoming addicted. And Fortune's wheel keeps turning for all soccer fans!
OK, back to the dissertation.
