Gentlemen, Start Your Engines: Mercedes Car Museum Opens in Germany

posted Saturday, 20 May 2006

Who doesn't love a beautiful auto?  A great auto is like a moving work of art.

And to celebrate Germany's tradition of cars, a brand-new car museum has just opened in Stuttgart!  It's done by Mercedes-Benz (of course) and it is the world's largest museum dedicated to cars.  Do click on the link: the news story has several very nice photos of the new museum.  Even the building looks like  interesting modern art.

Fun!  Oh, and see this amusing historical detail from the Spiegel article:

Visitors move upward in elevators, to the tune of travel noises that take them back in time, right back to the sound of hooves. When they enter the exhibition, they face a stuffed horse. Next to it is a quotation from Wilhelm II. "I believe in horses," the German Kaiser said in 1905. "Automobiles are a passing phenomenon."

Hm, I think Italy's car museums now have some German competition!   (Sorry, Ferrari museum!)

Here is the Mercedes museum's official website.
