This time the madness is all personal. I'm not usually a big soccer fan, but the World Cup is special, so I can't resist joining. So why is the madness personal this time? I'm not blogging about Germans painting their houses the colors of the flag or English fans with balloon planes. No, this time it's a bit more personal because . . .
The US team is about to play against the Czech Republic!
It should be a good, hard match. So I am posting this and then I am running from the books to find the closest TV blaring out ESPN. The Czechs are said to be very, very good. I will be cheering for my national team, though. (No, I have NOT painted my face with flags or dyed my hair red, white, and blue. Sorry to disappoint. I did say I wasn't an obsessive fan, just a really interested spectator, right?)
More bloggage later maybe, after the match. I'm off -- and so are, I have to say, a lot of other girls. (It's really rather nice that there are so many fans who are women.)
Dissertation? What dissertation?
UPDATE 1: I just overheard the following: Someone has just said that the main key to the US's chances is defense. Someone else then replied, "Well, yeah, but isn't the point to score some GOALS? You need good defense, but even more, you need GOALS!!!" *Giggle!* Ah, there's nothing quite like a bunch of people all excited about soccer and not caring at all about anything else.
UPDATE 2: Apparently a lot more Americans are watching soccer nowadays!
UPDATE 3: Three words only to describe the total 3-0 disaster: "crash and burn." It was pretty bad! As for the defense/offense debate in Update 1, I will say this: the debate doesn't even matter if the team has neither defense nor offense! Now watching Italy versus Ghana.
