World Cup Semifinal Madness

posted Wednesday, 5 July 2006

Yesterday's Italy-Germany match was for me the big epic match of the tournament.  What game it was!  Wow.

A 0-0 tie until late into overtime, when suddenly the Italians scored twice in two minutes with lightning-fast strikes.

Italy wins 2-0 and advances to the final!  Congratulations to the jubilant Azzurri!  Congratulations too to the German side for bringing energy, excitement, and joy to its fans this World Cup.  Germany, you should be very proud indeed.  (Will California Klinsmann stay as head coachI hope so.)

Favorite image of the match: video of massive crowds in the Circus Maximus in Rome -- thousands of passionate, screaming Italian fans watching the match on huge TV screens.  2000 years ago, thousands of Romans crammed into the same place to scream and cheer and yell at sporting events.  Same now.  Some things just don't change.

Today I'll be watching the France-Portugal match, but in a way, it seems like an anticlimax after the gigantic clash of Italy and Germany.

As for the final, the championship match?  My money is on Italy, Italy!  I leave you with this gorgeous photo of happy fans from the Eternal City:
